21 Bridges (aka Manhattan Lockdown) (2019)


The fact Chadwick Boseman's NYPD police detective locks down Manhattan Island as a means of hunting down two police killers is just a passing detail, really, but so little else of note happens in this police procedural - just several moments of clunky editing and a completely from-the-start predictable plot - it is the closure of the twenty-one exit points from Manhattan Island that gives this ho-hum crime drama its title!

The Lost City of Z (2016)


It doesn't matter whether Charlie Hunnam's Colonel Percival Fawcett is fleeing a poison dart ambush in the jungles of Bolivia, leading his men to violent death in The Battle of the Somme, or in bed telling his wife he is heading on yet another expedition to Amazonia to look for a fabled city, he talks - the - whole - way - through - this - movie in a breathy half-whispered monotone to the point of making this beautifully photographed but dreary, adventure-free Boys Own Adventure almost unbearable to sit through.

Live By Night (2016)


A long, sprawling gangster epic that tackles weighty matters in the Prohibition era like religion, the Klu Klux Klan and the advent of organised gambling in America, shouldn't feel this lightweight, with Director, Producer and star, Ben Affleck perhaps still in Batman cartoon mode, relying on an array of brightly coloured fedoras to enliven his trademark lamppost presence in a movie that feels like you are watching someone play Grand Theft Auto V.
