JFK (1991)

As New Orleans District Attorney Jim Garrison, Kevin Costner is required to deliver only short and grammatically simple lines and he delivers them all the same wooden way with upward inflection as though everything is a question, but his woodenness suits the machine-gunned details of the JFK investigation, presented here in the first of Oliver Stone's three President movies (so far), this one an epic three-and-a-half hour conspiracy theory, some of the details of which you have the advantage over Jim Garrison of being able to shoot out of the water with a quick Wiki search on your phone while you are watching.

Home Alone (1990)

Poor Kevin is accidentally left home alone over the Christmas holiday period in this kids classic featuring a very cute Macaulay Culkin as Kevin who revels in his newfound freedom, calmly and expertly booby-trapping his home and unleashing Warner Bros cartoon-style violence upon a pair of bumbling house thieves.

Lethal Weapon 2 (1989)

As a kid, I was mad about this buddy cop sequel to Lethal Weapon that reunites Riggs and Murtaugh on a case investigating a rascist drug-dealing South African diplomat, but now, watching it again, the extent of its success beggars belief with nothing in it even closely resembling real police work and while the zippy story offers plenty of humour and tension between the cop duo and the bad guy, it is otherwise about as complex as a two-hour fistfight.
