Photos at the end show the real-life adventurers, one European, one American, whose diaries about their Amazonian journeys form the movie's basis; these photographs tell a compelling story about the collision of colonial and Amazonian cultures but the movie less so - its every moment is heavy, with its whole (a loooong string of fever dreams, delusions, seizures, sermons, and petulant fights) like the work of an earnest history teacher who means to breathe life into the photographs but in fact sucks it out of them.
